What are the Symptoms of Liver Disease in Dogs

1. Loss of Appetite

It's easy to miss the symptoms of liver disease. They're similar to those for other problems. Your dog may lose interest in food and start losing weight. He may vomit or have diarrhea.

2. Confusion

You may notice your dog seem confused or walk funny, being unstable in his stance and weak. Increased urination can accompany these symptoms as well, and there may be blood in his pee or poop.

If your dog's liver disease isn't caught early, it can lead to a serious brain condition called hepatic encephalopathy.

What Causes Liver Disease in Dogs?

Several diseases, including liver dysfunction, are common in older dogs. Certain dog breeds, such as Dobermans, Rottweilers, Yorkshire terriers and Cocker Spaniels, are more likely to be born with or are prone to develop particular liver problems. Some breeds, such as Bedlingtons and West Highland white terriers have been known to have difficulty excreting copper, which can impact a dog’s liver or copper-associated hepatitis.
